A new ship has landed on the designer jewelry scene, bringing a booty of gothic and fantasy-ridden pieces. Corpus Christi, by Thierry Gougenot, opened in Montmarte in 2006, followed by a smaller boutique in the Marais to meet the demands of the line’s growing popularity.
The oft-publicized French designer, who’s preparing pieces for couturier Christian Lacroix, culls from a Where the Wild Things Are-pool of religious art, childhood stories of pirates, wild jungles and far islands. The store’s playful interior resembles a ship—white-painted wooden planks, scattered shells—giving way to the chunky and semi-precious pieces with dangling skeletons, knives, skulls and bones.
Crucification-wreath crosses in gold or silver are another trademark; Gougenot appears to bear no qualms about committing sacrilege, but he certainly knows how earn a cult following.
